Google turns on HTTPS for all Gmail messages

After Edward Snowden revealed the massive scaled of the NSA secret surveillance programmes, many tech companies were said to have helped the security agency with their spying. However, soon there were to be denials and outrage.

Remember Google employees and bigwigs lashing out against the NSA and its allies after it was revealed that they can secretly access all your Gmail communication? Google had vowed to fight back by making Gmail use an encrypted HTTPS connection in the future. Starting today, Google has flicked the switch on to make the move final.

“Your email is important to you, and making sure it stays safe and always available is important to us. As you go about your day reading, writing, and checking messages, there are tons of security measures running behind the scenes to keep your email safe, secure, and there whenever you need it,” Nicolas Lidzborski, Gmail Security Engineering Lead, wrote in a blog post on the official Gmail blog.

It must be noted that HTTPS is not a new technology for Gmail and has existed since its launch. In 2010, Google made HTTPS default, but users could still opt to communicate over insecure lines. But now that’s no longer an option. “Today’s change means that no one can listen in on your messages as they go back and forth between you and Gmail’s servers—no matter if you’re using public WiFi or logging in from your computer, phone or tablet.”

Having said that all’s not well just yet. If, for example, you have a lot of communication with non-Gmail users, there’s no guarantee that your emails to them will be encrypted too. It’s still wiser to use an encryption service for your emails as that’s far more effective. And even if Google says all emails on their servers and in their data centres are encrypted, that doesn’t mean they cannot be intercepted in the middle through different means such as tapping into undersea cables, which the NSA has been known to have used from time to time, as an earlier report points out. All this means is that your Gmail is a little more secure than it was before.

Google also taken additional steps to ensure greater transparency in the light of accusations of scanning through your inbox for purposes other than tailored ads. Now emails will be encrypted even while moving internally within Google’s data centres. “This ensures that your messages are safe not only when they move between you and Gmail’s servers, but also as they move between Google’s data centers—something we made a top priority after last summer’s revelations.”

Lidzborski is referring to the revelations made by Edward Snowden last year, which shone the light on a number of US government secret surveillance programmes. NSA and its allies reportedly had access to all of Google’s servers, but the company has maintained that it has never colluded with authorities for mass surveillance programmes and only hands over data after court orders. At TED 2014, Google co-founder Larry Page railed against the NSA tactics and called their methods a threat to democracy. The company is one of the many tech giants who have teamed up to force the US government make reforms in how the NSA obtains data.

Fewer headaches now

It was the first iPhone to bring the now-familiar industrial design to the fore, so there’s a bit of ‘technoholic’ nostalgia for the iPhone 4 in our minds. But with iOS 7, that was replaced with mockery and complaints as the phone refused to function as an Apple device is expected to. So we were really eager to see how Apple would fix the major bugs with the iOS 7.1 update and looks like the Cupertino company has delivered.

According to Ars Technica’s review, there are slight improvements in application loading times, while some animations have been trimmed to enhance performance. The website said that Apple has revitalised the iPhone 4 and worked its magic once more when it comes to hardware and software optimisation.

But we decided to wait on delivering a verdict before we could see how things are first-hand. Firstpost’s Arun George has been struggling with an iPhone 4 running iOS 7 since the update came out, but is looking a bit more chipper since the 7.1 update hit his phone. Here’s his account:

It was difficult to avoid the temptation of iOS 7 despite being advised against it. An iPhone 4 was never the ideal device to receive the update to iOS 7, and complaints began hitting the web about how some units had begun to malfunction after the update. I ignored every one of them to get the new operating system and apart from giving the phone a new appearance, it did little beyond slowing it down.

Applications slowed, and in some cases even crashed. Switching between applications became a task and opening an application often took its own sweet time. Subsequent updates didn’t help either. Until yesterday, when I downloaded the iOS 7.1 update.

There are visible improvements now in the speed of the phone. Applications open faster, shut faster and so far I haven’t experienced any time lag in switching between two of them. The phone screen which had been rather unresponsive since I upgraded to iOS 7, is now working like it did before I downloaded the latest version of iOS.

But the biggest difference for me is in the operation of games. FIFA 14, which often slowed down and hung, is now functioning smoothly. For the first time since I downloaded iOS7, I could play a game without it slowing down, hanging or crashing.

So it looks like Apple has managed to make the iPhone 4 a little more appealing to those who were looking to buy one, but were afraid of the bad user experience. Of course, with Apple typically having supporting devices for three years, the iPhone 4 will in all likelihood not see the next version of the OS.

Facebook Inc will allow more marketers to run video advertisements on its website, provided the world’s No 1 social network deem them to be of high-enough quality.

Facebook and social media rivals like Twitter are increasingly trying to grab a slice of lucrative TV-marketing budgets as they try to sustain rapid growth. That market is considered crucial to supporting Facebook’s growing market valuation and poses a potential long-term threat to traditional TV networks.

Facebook has moved cautiously to avoid annoying users. Social media players like Twitter are typically careful not to clutter up their users’ pages with unwanted material.

The 15-second video ads, which appear in newsfeeds and will play automatically with sound muted, will become available to a limited number of marketers over the next few months, Facebook said on its official blog on Thursday. It first tested video ads with a single advertiser in December. Facebook said that video ads will be available to a “a select group of advertisers,” without details.

The price that marketers pay to run a video ad on Facebook will be determined by the size of the audience as measured by measurement firm Nielsen, Facebook added. Marketers will be able to choose specific times of day for their spots and will be able to target ads according to age and gender.

However, Facebook said it would review the creative quality of any video spots that appear on its website, assessing ads for criteria such as watchability, meaningfulness and “emotional resonance.” Such reviews will be done in partnership with video analytics firm Ace Metrix. “We’re taking this step in order to maintain high-quality ads on Facebook and to help advertisers understand what’s working to maximize their return on investment,” Facebook said in the post.

iPhone 6 coming this year?

Mobile component maker Foxconn today said it expects to manufacture 90 million units of the sixth version of Apple’s iconic iPhone this year.

The California-headquartered firm is yet to announce the launch of iPhone 6. However, analysts suggest the smartphone could be launched in fall (Autumn) this year, which is usually the time when Apple unveils its handset offerings.

“Foxconn is expecting to manufacture 90 million units of the iPhone 6 from Apple in 2014. These orders are expected to land across the year,” Taiwan-based Foxconn said.

The growth rate of global smartphone shipments are expected to land at 28 per cent in 2014 as compared to 40 per cent in 2013, it added.

Sales of smartphones in mature markets are likely to edge up only 4 per cent, down from 5 per cent a year ago, it said.

“Foxconn is expected to post an EPS of New Taiwan Dollar 9.29 (USD 0.31) in 2014 and New Taiwan Dollar 10.26 in 2015,” the firm added.

According to research firm IDC, Apple will release a large-screen version in 2014, but will not altogether abandon the smaller 4-inch screen version of previous models.

The research firm said iOS operating system posted its lowest positive growth for the quarter (Oct-Dec 2013) at 6.7 per cent and for the year at 12.9 per cent, under performing the overall market in both instances.

In calendar year 2013, Apple sold 793.6 million units of its smartphone operating system (iOS) against 500.1 million in 2012.

Shipments of iOS-enabled smartphones stood at 51 million units in October-December last year from 47.8 million in the year-ago period.

In 2012, Apple’s smartphone operating system shipments rose by 46 per cent to 135.9 million units against 93.1 million units in 2011. For Q4 2012, shipments rose by 29.2 per cent to 47.8 million units against 37 million in the same period of 2011.

According to research firm Canalys, iOS shipments in 2011 rose by 96 per cent to 93.1 million units compared to 2010.

How Facebook plans to use WhatsApp's data

Privacy advocates have asked US regulators to halt Facebook Inc’s $19 billion acquisition of messaging service WhatsApp until there is a clearer understanding of how the company intends to use the personal data of WhatsApp’s 450 million users.

WhatsApp, a service that allows mobile phone users to send each other messages, has had a longstanding commitment to not collect user data for advertising purposes.

But there’s no guarantee that that commitment will hold true once the service becomes part of Facebook, according to the filing to the Federal Trade Commission by the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Center for Digital Democracy, both non-profit groups.

The complaint asks regulators to investigate the deal “specifically with regard to the ability of Facebook to access WhatsApp’s store of user mobile phone numbers and metadata.”

Facebook, the world’s No.1 social network with 1.2 billion users, generates the majority of its revenue by showing ads that target users by age, gender and other traits.

“As we have said repeatedly, Whatsapp will operate as a separate company and will honor its commitments to privacy and security,” Facebook said in a statement in response to the filing. The FTC declined to comment.

Facebook stunned the technology industry last month when it announced its intention to buy the five-year old WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock. WhatsApp does not show ads on its service, charging some of its users a $1 annual fee to use the service.

WhatsApp stores users’ mobile phone numbers, but unlike many online services, it does not collect user names, emails, and other contact information.

Despite assurances by WhatsApp and Facebook that the privacy policies will not change, the groups that wrote the FTC filing note that Facebook has in the past amended an acquired-company’s privacy policies, such as the Instagram photo-sharing service that Facebook acquired in 2012.

Regulators must require that Facebook “insulate” WhatsApp user information from access by Facebook’s data collection practices, reads the complaint.

“WhatsApp users could not reasonably have anticipated that by selecting a pro-privacy messaging service, they would subject their data to Facebook’s data collection practices,” reads the filing.

Azoi, a US-based company, has launched a health monitoring device embedded within a phone case dubbed Wello for the Indian market. It helps users to measure and record their vitals by conveniently sliding onto a smartphone disguised as an iPhone case. Priced at Rs 12,350, Wello is now available for pre-order online on Azoi’s website. The company will start shipping the device in summer 2014. As a referal program, every purchaser will get a unique URL to share, and when a Wello is ordered using that URL the user will get a $10 credit.

Disguised as an iPhone cover

Packed with sensors, Wello fits onto the smartphone and measures a number of key vitals including heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, electrocardiography (ECG), blood oxygenation, lung functions and more. Users simply need to hold it for a few moments while hidden sensors take measurements and pass on gathered information to the Wello companion app. It shows instantaneous results and key data about your health.

Wello also connects with other health and fitness devices such as pedometers and sleep trackers to help identify how different behaviours can affect one’s physical state. Moreover, it promises safe and secure remote access and can be used to track the key vitals of family members too.

“Over the last two years, we have focused our efforts on coming up with a technologically advanced yet easy-to-use tool to help you monitor health and facilitate better lifestyle choices,” said Hamish Patel, Founder and CEO at Azoi Inc.

We are proud to introduce Wello – a not so small engineering feat in microelectronics, nano sensors, imaging, data analytics and design, that we hope will make a big difference in helping the world become a healthier place. We have effectively put health monitoring equipment, typically in large form factors, into a highly convenient and accessible mobile case,” he added.

Apple's patents aren't really special

A US judge on denied Apple’s request to permanently ban Samsung from selling 23 older-model smartphones and tablets that a jury found infringed on patents held by the maker of iPhones and iPads.

Judge Lucy Koh said Apple Inc. failed to prove that the South Korean company’s patent infringement caused irreparable harm to Apple sales.
The ruling puts an end to Apple’s efforts that began in 2011 asking that a court move to strike down the import and sale of devices in the US which had been found to have infringed Apple’s own patents in terms of design and operation of handhelds, which includes the Galaxy s2 and Tab 10.

“Based on the totality of all the evidence, the Court finds that Apple has not shown the combined effect of the three patented features drive consumer demand,” Judge Koh said in her decision.

The court concludes that Apple has not met its burden of proof to warrant an injunction,” Koh concluded. “Most significant is Apple’s failure to prove a casual nexus between Samsung’s infringement on Apple’s patents and Apple’s irreparable harm.”

The ruling came as the world’s two biggest smartphone makers prepare to go to court again later this month — this time over Apple’s allegations that Samsung’s newest devices, such as its Galaxy S III, also copied Apple technology.

The ruling Thursday stemmed from a 2012 verdict in which a jury agreed with Apple that Samsung had infringed touchscreen features.

However, Koh on Thursday denied Apple’s request for a permanent injunction to stop Samsung from selling the products, saying she was not convinced those features drove consumer demand.

Apple has argued in courts, government tribunals and regulatory agencies around the world that Samsung’s Android-based phones copy vital iPhone features. Samsung has fought back with its own complaints that some key Apple patents are invalid and that Apple has copied Samsung’s technology.

In November, a Silicon Valley jury added $290 million to damages awarded to Apple in connection with the 2012 jury verdict, bringing to $930 million the total amount owed by Samsung.

The whopping $19 billion that Facebook is paying for the service is also unusual

Marking one of the biggest acquisitions so far, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion last month. While we’ve been hearing the rags to riches tales around its creators Jan Koum and Brian Acton, here’s yet another feather in their cap. The duo has now secured a place in Forbes’ list of imminent billionaires.

While 38-year-old Koum takes the 202nd rank in the Forbes list, 42-year-old Acton takes the 551st spot. According to Forbes’ estimate, Koum holds about 45 percent stake in the company, while his co-founder Brian Acton’s stake is estimated at over 20 percent. That makes Koum worth $6.8 billion and Acton worth not less than $3 billion.

The duo are also known for their transformation from strugglers to billionaires. “37-year-old Jan Koum, born in the Ukraine, went to the US when he was 16-years-old. His family struggled living on food stamps, venture capitalist Jim Goetz revealed had said in a blog post. His house had no electricity or hot water. In fact, Koum’s family picked up their food stamps only a couple of blocks away from WhatsApp’s offices in Mountain View, California, said earlier report by Wired’s David Rowan.

Acton’s story shows us that persevering in spite of rejection worked miracles for him. In 2009, Facebook turned Acton down for a job. But Facebook wasn’t the only one to miss a golden opportunity, as Acton, who formerly worked at Yahoo, also appears to have been rejected by Twitter in 2009. Five years later, here they are.

In 2009, amidst the aftermath of the financial crisis, Koum and Brian Acton, longtime Yahoo employees, went on to create a messaging service that they hoped would become the biggest cross-platform in the world. Koum reportedly came up with the idea for his company in 2009 after his gym banned the use of cell phones.

Both are among the 26 new comers to join the list that also includes $3 billion worth Twitter’s Evan Williams. Bill Gates takes the top spot with a fortune worth $76 billion, but Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg is said to have most money in the past year. The list also includes 42 women billionaires.

Apple Inc sold more than $1 billion of Apple TV set-top boxes in 2013 and is investing heavily in the next generation of products, Chief Executive Tim Cook said at the company’s annual meeting on Friday.

Apple’s ability to again transform the fast-moving technology arena is the central question in investors’ and Silicon Valley executives’ minds as the company’s growth slows, and rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc take chunks out of its market share. Industry executives and Apple observers continue to believe that the company will come up with some sort of wearable device, like a smartwatch, and speculation persists about a long-rumored TV product of some sort to shake up the living room viewing experience.

“We’re working on some things that are extensions of things you can see and some that you can’t see,” Cook said at the annual meeting, referring to a 32 percent increase in research and development costs last year.

Responding to a question about innovation, Cook said Apple preferred not to talk about new products under development so as not to tioff the competition. “You can see we’re getting ripped off left, right and sideways,” he said.

Apple’s shares fell 0.27 percent to close at $526.24 on Friday. They have clawed back substantial ground since falling below $400 in June, but remain well below the record-high $700 level of 2012, weighed by concerns about whether the company has any new hit products in the pipeline. Though Cook steered clear of that discussion, he shed some more light on the Apple TV business, which executives have long referred to as a “hobby” for a company expected to chalk up some $181 billion in sales this fiscal year.

The $99 Apple TV set-top box, which streams content from Netflix and other video sources to a TV, had racked up $1 billion in sales in the past year, he said. “It’s a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days,” Cook said.

Cook took pot shots at Google, saying that most users of its Android mobile operating system are using older versions, presenting a security threat. In contrast, he said, 89 percent of users of devices based on Apple’s iOS operating system have the most recent version of the software.

Shareholders at the annual meeting at Apple’s Cupertino, California, headquarters re-elected all board members. In the run-up to the meeting at 1 Infinite Loop, many investors had publicly debated whether Apple should not put any of its massive cash pile to better use.

Cook said the company will provide an update within 60 days on how it will use the cash, which totaled nearly $160 billion at the end of 2013. That time frame is in line with Apple’s previous comments that it would announce its latest cash management plans around April.

Apple repurchased $14 billion in stock in a two-week period earlier this year, under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn, who had been publicly calling for the iPhone-maker to buy back an additional $50 billion of stock on top of its existing buyback program. The billionaire investor, who in late January said he held more than $4 billion of Apple shares, withdrew his shareholder proposal following Apple’s announcement of the buyback.

Some analysts believe Apple may eventually dip into its coffers to buy something big. The iPhone maker has so far shied away from the mega-acquisitions that far more aggressive rivals like Google and Facebook Inc have pursued, though Cook did not rule out forking over a big sum of cash if warranted.

Cook said Apple has acquired 23 companies in the last 16 months and remained on the lookout for interesting technology and companies. Apple is not in a race to acquire the most companies or to spend the most money, but that “doesn’t mean we won’t buy a huge company tomorrow afternoon,” he said.

And he warned shareholders not to focus too narrowly on short-term gains. “If you’re in Apple for only a week … or two months, I would encourage you not to invest in Apple,” he said. “We are here for the long term.”

You can't miss these updates (Image credit: Getty Images)

It’s been a rather busy week for apps with some getting new features, new clients and new platforms and some shutting down. Have a look at some app stories you cannot afford to miss this week.

Facebook Messenger for Windows desktop:

The desktop client of Facebook Messenger is shutting down come March 3. The app has started showing a link saying, “We’re sorry, but we can no longer support Facebook Messenger for Windows, and it will stop working on March 3, 2014. We really appreciate you using Messenger to reach your friends, and we want to make sure you know that you can keep chatting and view all your messages on http://www.facebook.com.” The move comes only days after it was announced that Facebook Messenger was coming to Windows Phone soon.

Goodbye, desktop. Hello, mobiles

WeChat gets a Mac client:

Cross platform messaging app WeChat is stepping up its game, and how. After completely revamping its Android client, WeChat has introduced a Mac app, available both in English and Chinese. WeChat had been available for use on the web earlier, by way of scanning a QR code, but this is the first time a native app has been unveiled. There’s a good chance that a Windows client could be released next. Get hold of the WeChat Mac client here.

Line will let you sell your own stickers:

Speaking of cross platform messaging apps, Line has now announced a new platform called the Line Creators Market. Starting April, you will be able to sell your own stickers on the app. You can make sets of 40 stickers at 100 yen, but you will need Line to approve it. The app will keep a 50 percent cut of all your sticker earnings.

Sell your own Line stickers soon

Skype-Microsoft Integration complete:

Updates galore! Skype has not only updated its Windows Phone app to support Microsoft accounts, it will also let you sign up for its services using a Microsoft account. Essentially, you won’t need to remember multiple IDs and passwords for your services, and get an optional two-step verification from Skype. Win-win?

Google+ for Android:

The Android version of Google+ has received a nifty little update that will improve your photo experience on the app. Now if you start editing a picture on one device, you can continue doing so on another one. Essentially back up full-resolution pictures and then edit them from wherever you have.

Along with this, Google has pushed out some new filters inspired by Snapseed and tools like better crop and rotate too. There’s also a new “All” view display for your entire photo library as well as browse them by date. Get the Google+ update for Android here.

New and improved Hangouts for iOS

Google Hangouts for iOS:

Not just Android, Google’s showing some love for iOS too! The newest version of Hangouts for iOS is bringing along a brand new look and feel, and easy navigation. You can now sent animated stickers to your contacts, record and send short video messages as well share your location. The app is now also optimised for the iPad.

Of course, it will still allow you to make all those free voice and video calls. There are also some major performance improvements. Head on to the App Store to download Hangouts 2.0 for your iOS devices.

Oggl for iPad:

Hipstamtic’s photo editor Oggl is now available for iPad. Which, of course, means being able to edit and view your images a lot better on the bigger screen. The app does not look like an oversized version of the iPhone app, which is a good thing.

Oggl comes to iPad

The app also brings along a new SurfMode on Air Play, which you can use to present an Oggl feed onto an Apple TV and have a live photo stream running. The Surf Mode works well on just the iPad too. There’s now a notifications ticker, that pretty much gives you information on all the love and reposts your pictures get on Instagram, Facebook, Flickr and more. Get the Oggl for iPad app from the App Store.

If you haven’t heard by now, Facebook just made its biggest move ever, buying the messaging service WhatsApp in a deal worth some $19 billion. That’s 19 times what Facebook paid for Instagram two years ago.

The WhatsApp Service run by the team of just 32 engineers, handles more than 50 Billion messages daily, and approx 385 million active users.

WhatsApp acquisition has also brought out fresh criticism over security for the billions of messages delivered on the platform. Security Researcher at Praetorian Labs identified several SSL-related security issues in WhatsApp application using Project Neptune, a mobile application security testing platform.

"WhatsApp communication between your phone and our server is fully encrypted. We do not store your chat history on our servers. Once delivered successfully to your phone, chat messages are removed from our system." Company said in a blog post.

But researchers found that WhatsApp is vulnerable to Man-in-the Middle attack because the app has not enforced SSL pinning and hence user credentials can be easily stolen. SSL pinning prevents the user of the application from being a victim of an attack made by spoofing the SSL certificate. SSL pinning won't prove a great solution is not validated properly.

WhatsApp does not perform SSL pinning when establishing a trusted connection between the mobile applications and back-end web services. Without SSL pinning enforced, an attacker could man-in-the-middle the connection between the mobile applications and back-end web services. This would allow the attacker to sniff user credentials, session identifiers, or other sensitive information."

WhatsApp is allowing its backend servers to use weak 40-bit and 56-bit encryption schemes, which can be easily cracked using brute force attack. 'This is the kind of stuff the NSA would love,' researchers said.

WhatsApp team has confirmed that they are actively working on adding SSL Pinning to their app, but still that is not enough to protect our privacy.

Facebook and WhatsApp assured that nothing is going to change after the acquisition and WhatsApp will continue to function as an independent service, but is that statement satisfied? May be we can trust Facebook, Google, WhatsApp.. But we really can't trust the U.S. Government and the Security agencies like the NSA, that don't respect our privacy and freedom of speech.

Mobile messaging apps often used to deliver sensitive data or used for personal and corporate communications, so the data stored by the service provider should be encrypted end-to-end, which is not yet in the case of WhatsApp.

But there are many other free secure chat applications are available like Telegram, Surespot, ThreemaTextSecure, RedPhone etc., that you should use to keep your data private and Secure, until WhatsApp will not adopt end-to-end encryption.

Voice calling Coming This Year

Following its acquisition by Facebook for $19 billion, WhatsApp is about to take its first major evolutionary step. The popular cross platform messaging app will be getting a voice calling feature come Q2 of 2014.

With the Mobile World Congress playing as the backdrop, WhatsApp’s CEO, Jan Koum has announced that the service will be adding a voice service to the app soon. “We are going to introduce voice in WhatsApp in the second quarter of this year,” he said. It’s interesting to note that the announcement’s come not only a few days after Facebook acquired WhatsApp but also on the service’s and Koum’s birthday. WhatsApp has turned five today, with the service having been founded in 2009.

Koum also announced that WhatsApp had now crossed 465 million monthly active users, a pretty impressive post-acquisition figure. There are also 330 million daily active users,a 15 million jump from the figures released just before Facebook acquired the service.

The CEO stressed on the need for WhatsApp to grow steadily while keeping competition at bay. TechCrunch has reported that WhatsApp first aims to bring Voice to Android and iOS first, followed by some Nokia and BlackBerry phones. Koum also stressed on the fact that there will be no planned changes to WhatsApp post Facebook’s acquisition; at least not yet. He said that there are still no plans of marketing and the company would continue doing service the way it has always done.

Both Koum and the WhatsApp team seem to be unperturbed on the service’s fifth birthday, despite having faced the biggest outage in the company’s history over the weekend. The service went down for a good three hours on Saturday following a network router outage, something that reportedly earned rival service Telegram 4.95 million followers.

Apple in need of new products. AP

Apple Inc is looking at cars and medical devices to diversify its sources of revenue as growth from iPhones and iPads slows, according to a San Francisco Chroniclereport.

Apple’s head of mergers and acquisitions, Adrian Perica, met with Tesla Motors Inc founder Elon Musk at the company’s headquarters last year around the same time analysts suggested that Apple acquire the Model S electric car maker, the newspaper reported on Sunday, citing a source.

The company is also exploring medical devices and sensors that can help predict heart attacks by studying sound blood makes at it flows through arteries.

The company’s senior vice president of operations, Jeff Williams, has met with US Food and Drug Administration chief Dr. Margaret Hamburg and Dr Jeffrey Shuren, who oversees the agency’s approval for medical devices, to discuss “mobile medical applications,” the paper reported, citing FDA records.

Apple could not be reached for comment.

Rival Google Inc recently bought thermostat maker Nest Labs for $3.2 billion, robot maker Boston Dynamic and artificial intelligence startup DeepMind Technologies Ltd. The company has also been working on projects including Google Glass and self-driving cars.

Investors hope that Apple, which last came out with a new device – the iPad – in 2010, has something up its sleeve for 2014. Speculation currently revolves around a smartwatch or even a long-rumored TV product.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 6, a mid-range smartphone, and may also launch wearable devices such as iWatch, in the second half of the year.

Others say Apple can use its huge iPhone and iTunes base to get into mobile payments or advertising.

Apple reported lower-than-expected iPhone sales for the holiday shopping quarter and gave a weaker-than-expected revenue forecast. The company has been ceding ground to Samsung Electronics Co and other rivals in China, its No. 2 market.

Starting with iOS 7, Apple began automatically sorting users' iPhone photos based on time taken and location. But a new patent application reveals the company is interested in taking it one step further, and allowing Siri to sort through iOS photos based on voice search and tagging.

The company's interests were revealed in a new patent application published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday. The filing, entitled "Voice-Based Image Tagging and Searching,"
describes associating "natural language" text strings with photographs saved on a device, like an iPhone.

Such text strings would be associated with speech input, much like users can access data on their iPhone by speaking in plain conversation to Siri, the device's voice-driven personal assistant. Text strings associated with photos could cover an entity, an activity, or a location, according to the filing.

Apple's application notes that a growing volume of photos collected by users on devices like iPhones makes them increasingly hard to sort through. The company notes that tagging photos based on names of people or places makes it easier to find what users are looking for.

"Apple's system would allow users
to use their voice to
tag and search photos
based on locations, people's
 names and more."

Apple's system would also allow users to tag photos with their voice. In one example provided by Apple, a user tells their device, "This is me at the beach," and the corresponding picture is tagged accordingly.

The proposed invention could even automatically tag corresponding photos, based on the time and location at which they were snapped, to make it easier for users to sort their pictures and not require them to individually tag each picture.

The proposed invention could even automatically tag corresponding photos, based on the time and location at which they were snapped, to make it easier for users to sort their pictures and not require them to individually tag each picture.

Apple's system could even recognize faces, buildings or landscapes to tag similar photos. For example, by a user telling Siri that they are captured in a photograph, the system could then intelligently tag other photos that capture the user's face.

With photos properly tagged, users could then use their voice in a similar manner to search for the pictures they are looking for. In another example, a user asks their device, "Show me photos of me at the beach," and related items are delivered.

Apple began automatically sorting pictures with a revamped Photos application that debuted in iOS 7 this year. Starting at a macro level, photos are presented in tiny thumbnails based on the year they were captured, and users can zoom in to find their photos sorted based on date and location.

In this manner of auto-tagging alone, Apple could utilize its proposed invention to allow Siri to sort through pictures. For example, saying "Show me photos from Hawaii taken in 2012" could present users with relevant photos, even without the need for tagging faces.

The application, first made public this week, was filed by Apple with the USPTO in March of this year. It's credited to Jan Erik Solem and Thijs Willem Stalenhoef.
